Cafés Philosophiques

At these events members of the project team will explain themes from their recent research in a relaxed, informal setting to members of the general public. Small-group discussions will follow, facilitated by project members. The Café will meet approximately ten times during the course of the project. Drinks and refreshments will be available.

Short summaries of the themes of discussion will be published on the project’s Outreach pages, where discussion can be continued online.

Café Philosophique 3: Roadside Picnic

This meeting of the Café will be introduced by Josh Thorpe, Postdoctoral Research Fellows at the University of Campinas, Brazil, and for 2017-18 Visiting Fellow of the KNBS Project. He will talk about the book 'Roadside Picnic' by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

Café Philosophique 2: Arrival

This meeting of the Café will begin with a free screening of the movie, ‘Arrival’
After the movie Giovanni Merlo, Postodoctoral Research Fellow in the KBNS project, will introduce a discussion on some of the philosophical issues raised by the movie, particularly to do with the nature of language and its importance in understanding ourselves and others.
Café Philosophique 1: Knowing Our Own Hearts

This first meeting of the Café will directly follow the Public Lecture given at 6.30-7.30 by Professor Carrie Ichikawa Jenkins of the University of British Columbia, and will discuss issues raised in her lecture, 'Knowing Our Own Hearts'.
